Today, nearly every datacenter has become heavily virtualized. In fact, according to Gartner as many as 75% of X86 server workloads are already virtualized in the enterprise datacenter. Yet even with the growth rate of virtual machines outpacing the rate of physical servers, industry wide, most virtual environments continue to be protected by backup systems designed for physical servers, not the virtual infrastructure they are used on. Even still, data protection products that are virtualization-focused may deliver additional support for virtual processes, but there are pitfalls in selecting the right approach.
This paper will discuss five common costs that can remain hidden until after a virtualization backup system has been fully deployed.
The purpose of IT backup and recovery systems is to avoid data loss and recover
quickly, thereby minimizing downtime costs. Traditional storage-centric data protection
architectures such as Purpose Built Backup Appliances (PBBAs), and the conventional
backup and restore processing supporting them, are prone to failure on recovery. This
is because the processes, both automated and manual, are too numerous, too complex,
and too difficult to test adequately. In turn this leads to unacceptable levels of failure for

When today’s incumbent solutions were designed over a decade ago, IT environments were exploding, heterogeneity was increasing, and backup was the protection of last resort. The goal was to provide a low cost insurance policy for data, and to support this increasingly complex multi-tier, heterogeneous environment. The answer was to patch together backup and recovery solutions under a common vendor management framework and to minimize costs by moving data across the infrastructure or media.
Old Dutch Foods, known for its broad selection of snack foods in the midwest United States and Canada, was struggling to get the right products to the right places at the right time. Its data center included outdated physical servers, and batch processing meant that inventory would not be updated until the end of the day as opposed to real time. In addition, recovering from power outages and disk failures could frequently take up to two weeks.
To modernize its data center, Old Dutch Foods invested in EMC Converged Infrastructure. The fast and easy deployment of two VCE VBlock® systems running JD Edwards, MS Exchange, mobile device apps, and operation of a backup site with replicated applications and data.

As organizational needs change and workloads become increasingly distributed, a key realization is emerging: traditional approaches to backup and recovery may no longer be sufficient for many organizations. These companies may have discovered that their existing tools are not keeping pace with other advancements in their computing environments, such as scale-out storage systems and hyperconverged systems, which seek to reduce data center complexity and help manage surging storage costs.
Traditionally, the best practice for mission-critical Oracle Database backup and recovery was to use storage-led, purpose-built backup appliances (PBBAs) such as Data Domain, integrated with RMAN, Oracle’s automated backup and recovery utility. This disk-based backup approach solved two problems:
1) It enabled faster recovery (from disk versus tape)
2) It increased recovery flexibility by storing many more backups online, enabling restoration from that data to recover production databases; and provisioning copies for test/dev.
At its core, however, this approach remains a batch process that involves many dozens of complicated steps for backups and even more steps for recovery. Oracle’s Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance (RA) customers report that total cost of ownership (TCO) and downtime costs (e.g. lost revenue due to database or application downtime) are significantly reduced due to the simplification and, where possible, the automation of the backup and recovery process.
