To best support global users and customers, enterprises require seamlessly connectivity between branch office locations, applications, and workloads hosted in the cloud. Many WAN solutions are ill-equipped for this task because they are generally rigid, complex to configure, and expensive to maintain. IoT adoption, a dramatic increase of the number of network devices, and the sophistication of security threats further compounds this challenge. Geographically-distributed devices need secure cloud connectivity, limiting the ability of existing WAN solutions to fulfill the need of distributed organizations. Cisco SD-WAN on Amazon Web Services (AWS) is an overlay WAN architecture that is designed to address modern enterprise cloud applications and workloads, heterogeneous WAN connectivity, distributed global workforces, and other business needs that traditional WAN solutions cannot meet. Cloud-based solutions are revolutionizing the way that enterprises conduct business. These web-based versions of common business tools, like analytics or document management tools, retain most or all of the functionality of their desktop versions and provide significant access, customization, and utility to end users. More organizations are ditching on-premises solutions and adopting cloud-based tools, also known as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), "hosted," or "on-demand" solutions. The are becoming invaluable assets in today's agile and mobile workforce.

Compiling a cloud services comparison is a daunting task in the rapidlyevolving cloud environment. There are thousands of cloud services, dozens of cloud service providers, and numerous Infrastructure-as-aService (IaaS) providers offering pay-as-you-go pricing models—each one frequently changing and upgrading their portfolios. We have chosen to limit our cloud services comparison to the top three IaaS providers providing service in the Western Hemisphere—Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP)—because, not only are these the IaaS providers most organizations are familiar with, they are also the IaaS providers whose services most organizations are likely to compare. This eBook provides an introduction to the range of services offered by the leading cloud service providers, information on regions and availability zones, a breakdown of cloud storage services, and more, to help inform you on your multicloud journey.

Digital transformation initiatives and the need for innovation are causing enterprises to rethink their IT landscapes including business-to-business (B2B) integration. Modern B2B integration is critical for enabling enterprises to achieve goals like increasing revenue, speeding up time to market, and improving efficiencies because these outcomes are dependent on having a successful business network. B2B practitioners have two goals — enable critical business initiatives and control costs — and cloud-based B2B services have been successful in helping enterprises achieve both goals. IDC interviewed eight IBM clients to understand how their use of IBM Sterling B2B Integration Services, part of the IBM B2B Cloud Services portfolio, has impacted their operations and businesses. Most cloud infrastructure vendors offer companies a stable and secure environment on which to build and run their applications without having to manage a data center, invest in hardware, or install and update software. While most cloud vendors provide the same types of services, they differ in how they charge for and deliver those services.

The all-encompassing data center is a thing of the past. Modern data environments are distributed and include remote and branch offices, mobile devices, and the Internet of Things (IoT) as well as cloud solutions such as infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and software as a service (SaaS). There’s more critical data to back up than ever before. Plus, data silos and fragmented management mean poor visibility, which can make it difficult to comply with regional data residency and security rules as well as service-level agreements (SLAs). On-premises data protection has not kept pace. According to a survey by Fujitsu, 45% of IT managers said they had lost data or productivity related to data protection inefficiency within the last year.1 Often, this is because on-premises backups are cumbersome and do not always happen on time.

Cloud has evolved from a technological innovation to an integral part of business. Companies in every industry are investing in Digital Transformation initiatives to evolve and grow; often, cloudbased platforms are foundational elements of these transformations, as businesses increasingly seek the flexibility and agility to roll out new software services in days or weeks, versus months or years. As Digital Transformation initiatives unfold, one key challenge is to modernize the data center to facilitate rapid delivery of new applications and services—while still ensuring that existing missioncritical applications remain high performing, available, and secure. Another challenge relates to new requirements for accelerating the analysis of organizational data to near real time, much faster than previously possible with earlier incarnations of Business Intelligence (BI). Agile businesses are demanding faster access to the information contained within operational and business data stores to

A multi-cloud world is quickly becoming the new normal for many enterprises. But embarking on a cloud journey and managing cloud-based services across multiple providers can seem overwhelming. Even the term multi-cloud can be confusing. Multi-cloud is not the same as hybrid cloud. The technical definition of hybrid cloud is an environment that includes traditional data centers with physical servers, private cloud with virtualized servers as well as public cloud provisioned by service providers. Quite often, multi-cloud simply means that an organization uses multiple public clouds from many vendors to deliver its IT services. In other words, organizations can have a multi-cloud without having a hybrid cloud, or they can have a multi-cloud as part of a hybrid cloud.

Take a look at the IT ecosystem of any company today and there’s a good chance you’ll find it includes offerings from several cloud services providers. That’s certainly the case at mid- to large-sized companies with at least 500 employees, according to a recent survey conducted by IDG Research. The survey of 100 senior IT professionals found that 59% are already multi-cloud adopters — that is, using computing and storage services from two or more cloud providers. Another 31% of respondents say they plan to become multi-cloud organizations in the coming 12-24 months, with only 10% still in the “consideration” phase.

The rise of the cloud and mobile computing has rapidly changed the nature of enterprise cybersecurity. The old paradigm, where all work was done behind a company firewall, has been breaking down. Employees work not just at the office, but also on the road and at home, on mobile devices and on their own personal computers. They’re no longer using a limited stack of enterprise applications. Instead, they increasingly require access to a wide variety of apps, cloud services, and new communication platforms.
