Public cloud will continue to be a viable deployment model for some applications, primarily software as a service (SaaS) and less differentiated horizontal workloads like test/dev and infrastructure. Workloads that define the business—the high value vertical applications or those containing confidential / sensitive data—will remain on-premises. Not everything can move to a public cloud, and each day sharpens the understanding that more IT deployments will be on-premises. Hybrid IT will be the de facto deployment strategy. It is simply unrealistic, except for very small businesses, to have an IT footprint that does not include a healthy dose of on-premises infrastructure. Intel Inside®. New Possibilities Outside. Digital information has quickly become the lifeblood of business success, enabling firms to become more operationally efficient and to better serve their customers. As companies seek to harness their data in new ways, the infrastructure that houses that data can falter under the strain. In response, new innovations have emerged to help address the concerns of managing and protecting these increasingly important data capacities. While some vendors focus innovation development on software alone and allow the hardware to remain commodity, Dell Technologies is delivering some impressive hardware innovation with Isilon’s next generation hardware to complement its software’s disruptive capabilities.

As organizations continue to virtualize their infrastructures to gain higher levels of operational efficiency, VM sprawl and resource utilization are two key factors that can quickly create havoc for IT admins. In resource-siloed infrastructures, where multiple administrators are in charge of different pieces of the infrastructure, complexity continues to grow as mission-critical data sets and organizations grow. This is especially true in dynamic, mission-critical environments, where one wrong move or lack thereof could significantly impact an application, the end-user experience, or worst case, company revenue. The impact of hyper-converged infrastructures on IT has been profound. In fact, 85% of respondents to a recent ESG survey already use or plan to use a hyper-converged solution in the coming months. Though that number appears high, it is not all that surprising. ESG also asked organizations to identify which factors drove them to deploy or considering deploying a hyper-conv

Enterprises of all sizes are undergoing massive data center modernization initiatives. They are looking to use technology to cut costs and drive competitive advantage. At the core of many of these transformations is an effort to reengineer IT delivery models to enable cloudlike flexibility of resources, and reduce both capital expenditures and operational overhead. That is giving rise to the private cloud movement. Indeed, private cloud adoption is accelerating and maturing. IT organizations are looking to the private cloud for the elasticity it can provide to add or remove resources as required. In fact, ESG research reveals that more than three-quarters of organizations would classify their private cloud deployment as either an advanced internal cloud or a basic internal cloud. Those organizations that have virtualized at least half of their production applications are more than twice as likely as their more physical infrastructure-dependent counterparts to categorize their environme

Business leaders are increasingly looking to IT to deliver a mobile workspace that allows employees to access corporate data, applications, and communication resources on their devices of choice. But making the most of the opportunity while minimizing risks can be complex and overwhelming for many IT teams. Therefore, it makes more sense than ever for IT leaders to consider virtual client computing (VCC), also commonly referred to as virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solutions.

While just about everyone is writing about how IT and the businesses it serves need to be transformed, the actual industry answers to both digital and IT transformation remain unclear at best. Are transformational initiatives all about analytics and big data? Or are they about the move to cloud in all its varieties? Support for mobile? More agile ways of working and developing software? Or are they actually all about crafting teams to promote more proactive dialog between the business and IT? The truth is, of course, digital and IT transformation depend on all of the above and more. They also depend on a resilient infrastructure that’s easily adapted to changing business priorities without requiring long hours spent on maintenance, updates, and addressing problems of service availability. But making all this work clearly and cohesively is far beyond the purview of almost any solution today—whether from a software management perspective or from a hardware infrastructure perspective.

For many companies the appeal of the public cloud is very real. For tech startups, the cloud may be their only option, since many don’t have the capital or expertise to build and operate the IT systems their businesses need. Existing companies with established data centers are also looking at public clouds, to increase IT agility while limiting risk. The idea of building-out their production capacity while possibly reducing the costs attached to that infrastructure can be attractive. For most companies the cloud isn’t an “either-or” decision, but an operating model to be evaluated along with on-site infrastructure. And like most infrastructure decisions the question of cost is certainly a consideration. In this report we’ll explore that question, comparing the cost of an on-site hyperconverged solution with a comparable set up in the cloud. The on-site infrastructure is a Dell EMC VxRailTM hyperconverged appliance cluster and the cloud solution is Amazon Web Services (AWS).
