Banks today are continuously challenged to meet rigorous regulatory requirements. They must implement strict governance programs that enable them to comply with a wide variety of regulations stemming from the financial crisis that began in 2007, including the DoddFrank Act, Basel Committee on Banking Supervision regulations, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) and the revised Markets in Financial Instruments Directive To keep pace with regulatory changes, many banks will need to reapportion their budgets to support the development of new systems and processes. Regulators continually indicate that the banks must be able to provide, secure and deliver high-quality information that is consistent and mature.

Every day, torrents of data inundate IT organizations and overwhelm the business managers who must sift through it all to glean insights that help them grow revenues and optimize profits. Yet, after investing hundreds of millions of dollars into new enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), master data management systems (MDM), business intelligence (BI) data warehousing systems or big data environments, many companies are still plagued with disconnected, “dysfunctional” data—a massive, expensive sprawl of disparate silos and unconnected, redundant systems that fail to deliver the desired single view of the business. To meet the business imperative for enterprise integration and stay competitive, companies must manage the increasing variety, volume and velocity of new data pouring into their systems from an ever-expanding number of sources. They need to bring all their corporate data together, deliver it to end users as quickly as possible to maximize

Restaurant technologies have transformed drastically over the past decade, however there have been several misconceptions about the impact big data can have on restaurant operations. According to a Hospitality Technology study, only 23% of restaurants have confidence in overall tech innovation. When it comes to the state of technology many restaurants are still stuck with disconnected architecture, complex legacy systems, lack of visibility, and high maintenance costs. These challenges ultimately intimidate restaurant operators to outdated systems and processes that significantly limit their business growth. This ebook looks at the four pressing challenges and presents one unifying solution.

This person clearly didn’t work in the financial sector and clearly didn’t use real-time data management technology to power innovative financial apps. When it comes to numbers - specifically, money numbers and customer interactions - you really don’t want to leave your data at the mercy of a legacy system that doesn’t let you mine your data for all the instant insights it can offer.

For decades, organizations relied on traditional relational database management systems (RDBMS) to organize, store, and analyze their data. But then Facebook came along, and an RDBMS was suddenly not quite enough. The social giant needed a powerful database solution for its Inbox Search feature, and Apache Cassandra—a distributed NoSQL database—was born. Released as an open source project in July 2008, Cassandra—named after the mythological prophet who famously put a curse on an oracle—became an Apache Incubator project in March 2009. It graduated to a top-level project in February 2010

We live in the age of “multi”. Everything is becoming more complex, more “intelligent”, and more distributed. Hybrid cloud isn’t really the new frontier—some companies have been operating in a hybrid cloud environment for nearly a decade—the new frontier is learning HOW to take full advantage of hybrid cloud without creating data silos or busting the IT budget. Enterprises are, of course, always looking for ways to make their computer systems faster, more highly available, more fault tolerant, and simpler to scale. But in the age of “multi,” this is becoming harder and harder to do. Imagine running a social network with millions of U.S.-based users and millions of European users. You could host all your servers and data in the United States, but then all of your European users would have a slower experience using your application than their U.S.-based counterparts. You could host all your servers and data in Europe, but then the U.S.-based users would have a slower experience. An obvio

Corporate data spreads across an ever-growing number of applications. Users (employees, contractors, partners, and customers) access those applications over a wide range of devices. Those devices take different forms: desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, smartwatches. Each device may use a different operating system. The locations from where people access your data can be on-premises or off, and in any number of places around the globe. Data, users, apps, devices, locations—the sheer number of permutations and combinations is mind-boggling. This complex nature of today’s IT environment opens security gaps and exposes your business to undue risk. To illustrate, try to envision all the permutations and possible entry points for risk in your organization. Imagine that you have 400 users, each using 25 apps. When you multiply those together, that’s 10,000 potential access permissions to manage. Access permissions change as users come and go, roles change, new apps are added, and

Organizations are at a strategic crossroads. According to IDC analysts,1 two-thirds of CEOs will center their corporate strategies around digital transformation initiatives. The goal of digital transformation is only partly to make existing functions more effective. The greater goal is to be able to do new things and use existing data in new, better ways. Yet, 72% of current IT spending2—and the focus of IT resources—is on maintaining existing systems. This creates tension between what needs to be done today and what should be done for the future. Middle-tier applications, according to IDC,3 are the core of a digital transformation strategy because they provide data integration, messaging, and application programming interface (API) management. Middle-tier applications also provide a platform for application development and management that can handle traditional enterprise applications and cloud-native, distributed applications. Specifically, a Java™ EE-based application platform can

Businesses are struggling with numerous variables to determine what their stance should be regarding artificial intelligence (AI) applications that deliver new insights using deep learning. The business opportunities are exceptionally promising. Not acting could potentially be a business disaster as competitors gain a wealth of previously unavailable data to grow their customer base. Most organizations are aware of the challenge, and their lines of business (LOBs), IT staff, data scientists, and developers are working to define an AI strategy. IDC believes that this emerging environment is to date still highly undefined, even as businesses must make critical decisions. Should businesses develop in-house or use VARs, systems integrators, or consultants? Should they deploy on-premise, in the cloud, or in some hybrid form? Can they use existing infrastructure, or do AI applications and deep learning require new servers with new capabilities? We believe that many of these questions can be

The enterprise data warehouse (EDW) has been at the cornerstone of enterprise data strategies for over 20 years. EDW systems have traditionally been built on relatively costly hardware infrastructures. But ever-growing data volume and increasingly complex processing have raised the cost of EDW software and hardware licenses while impacting the performance needed for analytic insights. Organizations can now use EDW offloading and optimization techniques to reduce costs of storing, processing and analyzing large volumes of data. Getting data governance right is critical to your business success. That means ensuring your data is clean, of excellent quality, and of verifiable lineage. Such governance principles can be applied in Hadoop-like environments. Hadoop is designed to store, process and analyze large volumes of data at significantly lower cost than a data warehouse. But to get the return on investment, you must infuse data governance processes as part of offloading.

The biggest headache for most payment operations teams is cost control — and a large part of it comes from fraud management: Investigation teams waste large amounts of time just assembling the data needed to make decisions. Detection engines are always playing catchup with the latest fraud patterns. Ever changing regulations increase the time and cost required to reach compliance and meet audit standards. Given their scope and impact, replacing core fraud systems is not an option for most firms. But instead of replacing them, you can improve the investigative process with augmented investigation, and improve the detection process by enhancing current systems. This whitepaper describes three ways financial services firms can use TIBCO solutions to lower the cost of investigations through faster results, reduce fraud losses through better detection, and simplify audit and regulatory compliance through centralized access to information.

As an insurer, the challenges you face today are unprecedented. Siloed and heterogeneous existing systems make understanding what’s going on inside and outside your business difficult and costly. Your systems weren’t set up to take advantage of, or even handle, the volume, velocity, and variety of new data streaming in from the internet of things, sensors, wearables, telematics, weather, social media, and more. And they weren’t designed for heavy human interaction. Millennials demand immediate information and services across digital channels. Can your systems keep up?

The life of an enterprise architect is becoming busy and difficult. Before the era of big data, the enterprise architect “only” had to worry about the data and systems within their own data center. However, over the past decade there were revolutionary changes to the way information is used by businesses and how data management platforms support the information available from modern data sources.
