Given the evolution of past major advances in wireless-LAN technologies, it should come as no surprise that products based on the still-in-development IEEE 802.11ac standard are now appearing across the board, from residence to enterprise. Just as was the case with 802.11g and 802.11n, the standards-development process is now far enough along that the semiconductor community is shipping in volume, the Wi-Fi Alliance has been able to issue an initial interoperability specification, and system-vendor products offering up to 1.3 Gbps are now available at prices very close to those of 802.11n APs but with on the order of a 30% improvement in price/performance on a spectral-efficiency basis and from 100% to more than 200% in performance overall.

The client had an extensive global multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) network with over 30 Gbps of bandwidth. However, the client was experiencing bandwidth growth of >30% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) and foresaw increasing demands for multi-media applications, data center to data center traffic, and cloud solution usage to support its business units and global workforce. It became crucial for the client to re-architect their current network to support growth and provide a globally consistent user experience at lower cost. With 40% of their WAN traffic being http internet traffic, they needed regional internet service provider (ISP) breakouts. The client needed a lower cost/MB high capacity WAN backbone for better application performance and cloud optimization. Cisco’s Catalyst WS-C2960X-48TD-L and WS-C2960XR-48TD-I Gigabit Ethernet switches were evaluated by Miercom under the Certified Green program for power consumption and energy Using a 1518-byte frame size with 100% Layer 2 traffic load, testing showed both switches to be 55% more efficient in power consumption, measured in Watts/ Gbps, than the Industry Average efficiency. Overall environmental impact and business-enabling green benefits of the Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches were also analyzed.
