A common misconception about hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) is that because data services are software-defined, the hardware doesn’t matter. It’s easy to see why—the software driving HCI solutions such as the Dell EMC XC Series (in this case, Nutanix software) is exceptional. It efficiently manages data and communications across a cluster of nodes and storage tiers, keeping the cluster and virtual machines (VMs) up and running, delivering optimal performance and availability. Software-defined infrastructure is changing the way data services are delivered, making companies more efficient and agile, and reducing costs. The customers featured in this book include those who have migrated their existing applications (Oracle, third-party, and custom) and those who have deployed new applications. We also describe customers who have benefited from subscribing to a single IaaS service to meet their more tactical needs, such as low-cost and high-reliability archive storage. The motivations for IaaS adoption discussed in this book are organized into four key categories: Moving applications to the cloud Managing DevTest in the cloud Building performance-intensive workloads Using cloud-based archive storage

Application consolidation can be an important cloud initiative. By consolidating applications on an all-flash, cloud-centric platform, IT has the opportunity to reduce costs, lower risk and support a more integrated and interoperable infrastructure. But for any organization thinking about application consolidation, it is important to closely evaluate the features and functions of the underlying all-flash storage platform. You want to make sure that your platform not only delivers the performance you need, but also enables you to reduce costs, eliminate migrations, simplify operations and support cloud-enabled business agility.

The bank wanted to modernize its global data center core and edge networks to move to the next stage of its private cloud journey. The bank has long recognized the advantages of server virtualization, and it wanted to move more aggressively to a software-defined data center. The bank was virtualizing all services, including compute, storage, and network, to gain greater business flexibility and deliver cost savings. But first, it needed an elastic, flexible, and production ready network to connect its data centers. The bank wanted a dynamically scalable network to interconnect its data centers in Europe, Asia, and North America, so that it could move toward a fully automated, self provisioned cloud. The global network needed to deliver performance at scale for the company’s highly virtualized resources, while also supporting integration of legacy assets into its software-defined data centers.

We are critically aware of the growth in stored data volumes putting pressure on IT budgets and services delivery. Burgeoning volumes of unstructured data commonly drive this ongoing trend. However, growth in database data can be expected as well as enterprises capture and analyze data from the myriad of wireless devices that are now being connected to the Internet. As a result, stored data growth will accelerate. Object-based storage systems are now available that demonstrate these characteristics. While they have a diverse set of use cases, we see several vendors now positioning them as on-premises targets for backups. In addition, integration of object-based data protection storage with cloud storage resources is seen by these vendors as a key enabler of performance at scale, cost savings, and administrative efficiency.

For those struggling to convince their leadership to adopt software defined storage (SDS), this eBook from Dell EMC can help you make the case. We’ve gathered 5 ways server technology is advancing software-defined storage adoption, making it easier for businesses to implement SDS in the modern data center. The biggest misconception about SDS is that the underlying hardware is not important. It’s true, many of the features and performance enhancements are now provided by software.1 But, if you thought the hardware provider doesn’t matter when implementing an SDS solution, think again. We’ll show you why.

It is now apparent that three specific technology advancements—non-volatile memory express (NVMe), NVMe over fabrics (NVMe-oF), and storage-class memory (SCM)—are transformative and will end up guiding the future of high-end data storage. Each of those technologies reduce I/O latency significantly. However, organizations working to transform their data centers shouldn’t regard performance as the only end goal. Great performance is important because it increases an array’s ability to handle any workload intelligently, scale to meet unpredictable demand, and operate cost efficiently. The Dell EMC PowerMax powered by Intel® Xeon® processor is an impressive example of this type of modern storage architecture. It has been designed deliberately to maximize the speed of NVMe and by extension, offer transformational efficiency benefits and business value.
