Getting the most out of A/B and other controlled tests.
In the fast-moving digital world, even experts have a hard time assessing new ideas. Case in point: At Bing a small headline change an employee proposed was deemed a low priority and shelved until one engineer decided to do a quick online controlled experiment—an A/B test—to try it out. The test showed that the change increased revenue by an astonishing 12%.
That experience illustrates why it’s critical to adopt an “experiment with everything” approach, say Ron Kohavi, the head of the Analysis & Experimentation team at Microsoft, and Stefan Thomke, an HBS professor.
In this article they describe: How to properly design and execute A/B and other controlled tests
? Ensure test integrity
? How to interpret results and avoid pitfalls
In April 2014, Nissan opened a new production plant in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles and 200,000 engines.

For many years, organizations thought about business continuity in much the same way they thought about business insurance — yes, it was important, but rarely was it top of mind. But that’s all changed. Many organizations have, unfortunately, discovered that even a scant few minutes of service downtime can have deleterious effects on their business operations, resulting in lost revenue, diminished customer confidence and heightened compliance risk.
For those and other reasons, IT executives have raised the bar on business continuity preparedness for their organizations in all ways. New technologies, business processes and partnerships, combined with a raised level of importance for testing and a full appreciation of what virtualization can and can’t do for business continuity, are essential to new thinking around avoiding the impact
of an unplanned service interruption.

Your security products send alerts when a cyber attack strikes. Your incident response plan tells you what to do to block the attacker’s action and recover normal operations. But do you know how or where the attacker was able to get into your environment? Do you understand the tactics, techniques and procedures the attacker used?
In short, to move to the next level of security, organizations need a way to both understand and manage threat intelligence. Because an organization that can uncover the context of a threat can also better respond to it. Learn more about the impact of security threats from this whitepaper.

Quocirca surveyed over 300 organisations across the UK, France, Germany, the Nordics, Benelux, Italy, Iberia and Israel on their attitudes to cloud-based services. The research revealed that cost is not the only thing driving the adoption of cloud services; improved efficiency and easier external interaction are also important. Another finding was that impediments to cloud adoption vary significantly by industry. A key finding was that “cloud enthusiasts” are more aware of, and likely to invest in, security technologies like identity and access management than “cloud avoiders”.
Performance testing has always been about ensuring the scalability of a software application. Until the arrival of the first performance test automation solutions in the late 90’s, performance testing was a manual process that was difficult, if not impossible, to test in a consistent and reliable fashion.
The arrival of these new tool sets suddenly allowed software testers to turn discrete user actions into scripts that could be combined and replayed as test scenarios. Solving the consistency and reliability challenge, software testers could now repeat the same test on demand while reinforcing and imposing some new requirements.
As water is increasingly being recognized as a high-value commodity, aging assets present a major threat to organizations that treat and deliver it. Improving asset performance is one of the most effective strategies water and wastewater plants and networks can implement to reduce costs and protect quality.
When asked how important technology is to driving innovation in their organizations, 100 percent of CEOs indicated it was important, with 80 percent pointing out that it’s very important, according to HP sponsored research. Even CIOs agree with their CEOs.

The State of California sets a new standard for IT with Shared Services. Learn how the California Natural Resources Agency harnessed the power of cloud computing to reduce IT capital costs by 42% and speed up service delivery by 70%.
What you see isn’t always what you get with HR, talent, and learning software. Did you know that, even with the rigour frequently put into selection, two-thirds of HR software projects fail to produce at least half of the expected benefits? Or how about that a recent research project from Clarkson University determined that there was no link between HR software and HR’s ability to be more strategic? Even though HR technology is often sold as “best practices in a box,” looks can be deceiving. To avoid being duped by pretty demos of software with no substance and find a partner that can meet the hidden complexities that exist in your unique processes, you need to ask the right questions.

The results were pretty impressive, as employee engagement quickly soared to 87%.
To support digital transformation imperatives, organizations are increasingly exploring DevOps style approaches for the continuous delivery of high quality software. Unfortunately, however, many enterprises remain burdened with accumulated technical debt and legacy wasteful practices – waste that can quickly inhibit the flow of value to customers and the business. Lean thinking provides organizations with a framework by which to quickly identify all forms of waste impacting the flow of value, which DevOps practitioners can apply in a software development context to quickly pinpoint and eliminate 8 elements of waste across people, process and technology dimensions.
This paper presents the 8 elements of waste framework, strategies needed to identify and eliminate waste, and the metrics needed to measure effectiveness.
