More than ever before, IT managers need to secure equipment and facilities against a variety of intrusive conditions that could cripple critical operations, resulting in system malfunctions, loss of data or intellectual property, damage to mission critical hardware or even theft of valuable physical assets. Such conditions often include environmental events, failure of air conditioning systems, power outages, and untoward human actions.

Many premises-based phone system (PBX) manufacturers claim that the five year costs of their systems are lower than an equivalent cloud alternative. What the premises guys don’t tell you about is all the extra little hidden costs that come as a result of the limitations of the hardware and software in their systems. This guide will provide you with useful questions to ask your PBX manufacturer to ensure that you're getting the full picture on the cost of their system. Questions to Ask During an Evaluation: • Have you sized this system for my peak demand? • Have you factored in the cost of site redundancy? • How many hours of call recording are included? • How is mobility supported? Do calls route in an out of the PBX for call treatment? • What are the annual maintenance costs of the hardware and software in this system? • Which third party systems have you integrated this PBX with?

Client virtualization technologies are redefining the way IT resources are delivered to end users, and creating exciting new opportunities for IT organizations as they work to streamline and improve operations. By abstracting applications and operating systems from client hardware, virtualization enables client assets to be stored on central servers and delivered to client endpoints. The implications are profound. End users can log on to any networkconnected computing device and access their custom operating system and application environment. For IT departments, central management of client virtual machine (VM) images brings efficiencies in everything from routine maintenance and updating to operating system upgrades.

Miercom was engaged by Cisco Systems to independently configure, operate and assess aspects of campus-scale, wireless and wired network infrastructures from Cisco and Huawei Technolgies. Our evaluation found that, where Cisco and Huawei both offer all the comparable components for building a campus-wide, wireless and wired, network infrastructure, test after test found that the Cisco package offers certain positive advantages that Huawei does not. Cisco showcased superior performance against the Hauwei wireless solution with a highly developed resource management, hardware, software and security platform to provide the most optimized, trustworthy system to ever customer. Forget about the complex task of building your own solution. Commvault offers a portfolio of integrated backup appliances that allow you to go from power-up to backup in less than an hour. Each appliance combines Commvault’s industry-leading software with pre-configured and optimized hardware, including an option that uses NetApp’s category-leading NetApp E-Series storage system. To further simplify ordering and deployment, the appliances include a licensing option aligned to the usable storage capacity (e.g., 36TB of NetApp E-Series storage includes 36TB of Commvault back-end terabyte licensing). Or you can purchase the hardware separately and use it with Commvault’s traditional front-end terabyte capacity licensing. Either way, Commvault serves as the single point of contact for software and hardware support issues, and the installation wizard allows you to be up and running quickly regardless of the option you choose.

Email has become something of a critical utility, much like the electricity that powers our offices: it must be available 24 hours a day, it must provide reliable performance, and its cost must be reasonable. However, unlike electrical systems (at least from the user’s perspective), email systems require significant amounts of labor to manage well. Email systems must periodically be upgraded. New hardware must be introduced as organizations migrate to new systems. Security must be maintained and upgraded to protect the system from intrusions. Additional hardware must be deployed to protect against outages that could seriously harm user productivity. Plus, unexpected events, such as spam storms or natural disasters can drive up costs substantially in ways that were not anticipated.
