Omnichannel is one of those words everyone uses, but few use correctly. It’s not another word for multichannel. It’s a different state of existence. In our experience, multichannel is the ability to interact with customers across many different channels, but not necessarily in a cohesive fashion. As new channels become available, they are “bolted on” to existing customer experience infrastructure such as CRM or customer support systems. Too frequently, the management of these channels becomes siloed (web versus in-store sales, for example). The effect of this from the customer experience standpoint can be disjointed and jarring. For example, the resolution of an issue following a customer conversation with an associate in the contact center may not be reflected when the customer goes online or into a store. Yet the ability to offer multichannel service experience is table stakes for today’s business. If you’re not available in the channels where customers want you to be, you cease to b

In years past, device functionality was enough to sell most embedded products without much concern for cybersecurity. Of course there were exceptions, such as in critical infrastructure, aviation, and military, for which security was always of importance. But today’s environment has evolved on several fronts. First, organizations across nearly all markets are demanding Internet connectivity to monitor and control devices as well as to aggregate and analyze data. Second, the magnitude of security threats has exploded, driven by highly sophisticated hackers including organized criminal gangs seeking financial returns, creating a constantly evolving threat landscape. Third, the increasingly complex nature of connected systems makes them ever more challenging to protect. The more complex a system, the more potential vulnerabilities it may contain. And fourth, the data generated by connected devices represent an asset that is becoming increasingly valuable for organizations to derive insigh

New digital technology now makes it feasible to integrate process control and SIF within a common automation infrastructure. While this can provide productivity and asset management benefits, if not done correctly, it can also compromise the safety and security of an industrial operation. Cybersecurity and sabotage vulnerability further accentuate the need for securing the safety instrumented system (SIS). Certainly, a common platform approach using similar hardware and software dedicated for control and safety functions, respectively, can provide the potential for cost savings. However, it is widely acknowledged that utilizing separate, independent, and diverse hardware/software for safety and control is the optimal way to protect against potentially catastrophic common cause and systematic design and application errors. Different vendors offer varied degrees of integration and solutions. The question is: how to provide an integrated control and safety solution with advanced functionality and productivity without compromising safety and security? And, where do users draw the line? A third-party (e.g., TÜV) certification of the hardware/software systems to IEC 61508 specifications carries significant advantages, but should this be the only criterion? How does a third-party certificate extend to the plant’s overall assignment of risk reduction credits for all independent protection layers (IPL)? Control system embedded safety logic solvers may actually increase the SIL requirements of the SIF if no credit is allowed for the distributed control system (DCS) as an IPL. Digital transformation (DX) continues to headline business initiatives as companies look to remain competitive in the rapidly changing IT landscape. Organizations are increasingly investing in and implementing next-generation applications and architectures such as software-defined IT and hybrid IT to drive higher levels of efficiency and agility. These modern technologies and architectures, however, also require organizations to evolve their underlying infrastructure to support new capabilities and demands. Recent strength in the server market, which continues to operate in a marketwide refresh cycle, illustrates the growing demand for new infrastructure. 1Q18 marked the server market's fifth consecutive quarter of both shipment and revenue growth and represented a fourth consecutive quarter of year-on-year ASP growth, as customers continue to replace aging server infrastructure with more powerful and efficient systems that leverage the latest platform developments from processor supp

Today’s advanced cyber threats target every computer and mobile device, including enterprise endpoints, especially those that make up critical infrastructure like industrial control systems and embedded devices that control much of our physical world. The modern computing landscape consists of a complex array of physical, mobile, cloud, and virtual computing, creating a vast attack surface. Meanwhile, the cybersecurity industry is prolific with defense-in-depth security technologies, despite a threat landscape that remains highly dynamic, sophisticated, and automated. Cylance, however, takes a unique and innovative approach of using real-time, mathematical, and machine learning threat analysis to solve this problem at the endpoint for organizations, governments, and end-users worldwide.

Databases tend to hold an organization’s most important information and power the most crucial applications. It only makes sense, then, to run them on a system that’s engineered specifically to optimize database infrastructure. Yet some companies continue to run their databases on do-it-yourself (DIY) infrastructure, using separate server, software, network, and storage systems. It’s a setup that increases risk, cost, complexity, and time spent deploying and managing the systems, given that it typically involves at least three different IT groups.

For Japan’s largest medical equipment wholesaler, Mutoh, ensuring its 300,000 products reach hospitals, clinics and health-centres on time is an imperative. Someone’s life depends on it. Without IT that wouldn’t be possible. But Mutoh’s IT infrastructure was unable to keep pace with the demands of the business. Every time an order came in, Mutoh had to pull data from different systems across multiple servers which was time-consuming. It needed an IT infrastructure that was fast, high-performing, reliable, stable, and flexible. Mutoh turned to Lenovo’s hyperconverged infrastructure that helped the company achieve: • The ability to seamlessly extract data from different systems across multiple physical servers helped Mutoh respond to customer orders as quickly as possible, thereby saving lives • A modular hyperconverged solution allowed Mutoh to invest on a need basis, improving ROI and addressing spikes in customer demand

Enterprise chief information security officers (CISOs) are seeking ways to leverage existing security investments to bridge the divide between largely siloed security systems. The focus is on reducing the number of consoles needed to manage the security infrastructure. Network security vendors have a significant role to play in bridging the communication gap between these systems. The creation of a unified defense architecture enables threat data exchange between existing security systems. It helps automate the process of raising an organization's security posture when a security infrastructure component detects a threat. The following questions were posed by Fortinet to Robert Ayoub, program director in IDC's Security Products program, on behalf of Fortinet's customers.
