New digital technology now makes it feasible to integrate process control and SIF within a common automation infrastructure. While this can provide productivity and asset management benefits, if not done correctly, it can also compromise the safety and security of an industrial operation. Cybersecurity and sabotage vulnerability further accentuate the need for securing the safety instrumented system (SIS). Certainly, a common platform approach using similar hardware and software dedicated for control and safety functions, respectively, can provide the potential for cost savings. However, it is widely acknowledged that utilizing separate, independent, and diverse hardware/software for safety and control is the optimal way to protect against potentially catastrophic common cause and systematic design and application errors. Different vendors offer varied degrees of integration and solutions. The question is: how to provide an integrated control and safety solution with advanced functionality and productivity without compromising safety and security? And, where do users draw the line? A third-party (e.g., TÜV) certification of the hardware/software systems to IEC 61508 specifications carries significant advantages, but should this be the only criterion? How does a third-party certificate extend to the plant’s overall assignment of risk reduction credits for all independent protection layers (IPL)? Control system embedded safety logic solvers may actually increase the SIL requirements of the SIF if no credit is allowed for the distributed control system (DCS) as an IPL.

Virtualized Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) is a major breakthrough in network function virtualization (NFV). When asked where they have deployed NFV in production networks, communication service providers (CSPs) consistently name vEPC as one of the top answers. Why is that? In order to maximize their processing capacity, CSPs virtualize a subset of their network applications, including mobile edge computing (MEC), base stations (small/macro cells) and the mobile core, because these systems use a large bandwidth. The mobile packet core builds the foundation of the core network on which mobile CSPs offer IP-based services to their customers. Implementing vEPC solutions can help CSPs obtain the scale necessary to accommodate growing numbers of subscribers and large amounts of traffic or connections while controlling costs and improving on quality of experience (QoE). In the past, evolved packet core (EPC) solutions were deployed on purpose-built hardware. NFV enables operators to deploy EPC c

Headquartered in Chicago, Bean Suntory owns over 70 premium spirit brands from whiskey and rum, to vodka, cognac, tequila, and gin. Beam Suntory generates $4 billion in annual revenues. But that revenue was in danger. The company’s production software, Wonderware, which controls embedded systems driving almost every critical production process, was underpinned by ageing hardware. If it failed, production would come to a grinding—and expensive—halt.Every hour of downtime results in lost production, which can amount to millions of dollars in losses,” says Sanjay Kirtikar, Director Digital Technologies, Beam Suntory. To ensure Wonderware never failed, Beam Suntory implemented hyperconverged clusters integrated with Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform software The results were instant and outstanding. Beam Suntory expects a 25-35% cost benefit from lower support and maintenance efforts, and a 50% reduction in power usage.

The rise of virtualization as a business tool has dramatically enhanced server and primary storage utilization. By allowing multiple operating systems and applications to run on a single physical server, organizations can significantly lower their hardware costs and take advantage of efficiency and agility improvements as more and more tasks become automated. This also alleviates the pain of fragmented IT ecosystems and incompatible data silos. Currently, this virtualization juggernaut shows no sign of slowing. As businesses recognize the potential for increased reliability and scalability offered by virtual technology, they are ramping up their investments in data center modernization and upgrading. In fact, 33 percent of the respondents to a recent ESG survey on cloud usage said that making greater use of server virtualization was one of their top five spending priorities for the next 12 to 18 months.

Virtualization is rapidly changing the way business IT operates, from small local businesses to multinational corporations. If you are reading this, chances are good that your company is already taking advantage of virtualization’s benefits. Virtualization means that a single underlying piece of hardware, such as a server, runs multiple guest operating systems to create virtual machines, or VMs, with each of them being oblivious to the others. An administrative application, such as VMware, manages the sharing process, allocating hardware resources, memory, and CPU time to each VM as needed. And all applications look at this software construct exactly as if it were a real, physical server — even the VM thinks it’s a real server! Virtualization makes good financial sense. It enables a single server to offer multiple capabilities that otherwise would require separate servers. It includes native high availability features, so you don’t have to use any more complex clustering tools. This ab

Datacenter improvements have thus far focused on cost reduction and point solutions. Server consolidation, cloud computing, virtualization, and the implementation of flash storage capabilities have all helped reduce server sprawl, along with associated staffing and facilities costs. Converged systems — which combine compute, storage, and networking into a single system — are particularly effective in enabling organizations to reduce operational and staff expenses. These software-defined systems require only limited human intervention. Code imbedded in the software configures hardware and automates many previously manual processes, thereby dramatically reducing instances of human error. Concurrently, these technologies have enabled businesses to make incremental improvements to customer engagement and service delivery processes and strategies.

Security is a looming issue for businesses. The threat landscape is increasing, and attacks are becoming more sophisticated. Emerging technologies like IoT, mobility, and hybrid IT environments now open new business opportunity, but they also introduce new risk. Protecting servers at the software level is no longer enough. Businesses need to reach down into the physical system level to stay ahead of threats. With today’s increasing regulatory landscape, compliance is more critical for both increasing security and reducing the cost of compliance failures. With these pieces being so critical, it is important to bring new levels of hardware protection and drive security all the way down to the supply chain level. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has a strategy to deliver this through its unique server firmware protection, detection, and recovery capabilities, as well as its HPE Security Assurance.
